Privacy and Cookie Policy

This page explains what information is processed when you use LiveEarthquake. There are no accounts, sign-ups or forms; we never ask for your name or email address.

Earthquake data

Earthquake records are fetched by our server from the public services of USGS and regional agencies (AFAD, EMSC, JMA, GeoNet, Geoscience Australia, NRCan). Your browser does not contact these agencies directly.

Location

To open the map on your country, your country (not your city or address) is estimated from your IP address by our hosting provider. It is used only to choose the map view and is not stored. If your country cannot be determined this way, or if you press "Use my location", your browser asks for permission; the coordinates are rounded and used once to find your country, and are not stored.

Base map

Map tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap servers, which technically receive your IP address and browser information to deliver them; OpenFreeMap states that it does not use cookies. If you turn on topographic relief, elevation tiles are loaded from Amazon Web Services (AWS Open Data, Terrain Tiles).

Preferences stored in your browser

Your map view, relief and world-view preferences and, if shown, your cookie choice are kept only in your browser's local storage and are never sent to our server. Your filters are part of the page address.

Analytics and advertising

To count visits we use Vercel Web Analytics. It does not use cookies or store personal data: page views, country, device type and referring site are recorded as anonymous totals, and visitors are distinguished only by a hash that is reset every 24 hours. See Vercel's analytics privacy policy.

No cookie-based analytics or advertising services are currently enabled and no tracking cookies are used.

Server logs

Our hosting provider may keep standard technical logs such as IP address and request time for a limited period for security and debugging.

You may have rights under the GDPR or other data protection laws that apply to you. For requests, contact details will be added to this page soon.
